Bayelsa State Commissioner for Ijaw National Affairs, Hon. Patrick Erasmus has called on patroitic sons and daughters of Ijaw nation to eschew all forms of divisive tendencies, forge a common front in order to move the ethnic nationality forward.
Erasmus also appealed to well meaning citizens of Ijawland to close ranks and tow the part of peace to finally resolve the differences arising from the outcome of the botched Ijaw National Congress (INC) elections.
The commissioner who made the call while exchanging views with newsmen in his office in Yenagoa, said the absence of a leadership in the umbrella body of the Ijaw people, the INC has branded the Ijaw nation as a sheep without a sherpherd and urged for a common vioce for the interest of future generations.
He said : ” we the Ijaw people are democrats in nature and the word “Izon” mean truth, at the meeting of the leaders of thought we spoke frankly to ourselves. We admonished ourselves that we must speak the truth. I personally, have been talking to our people and that it must not be war, war all the time. We should learn to forgive one another, unite and work in harmony. it is only in unity we can derive strength as by so doing we can make progress.
” I know other well meaning citizen too who have been talking and pleading that we should close ranks, we should come together and I also believe that as we are talking to ourselves the messages are really going into the heart of the people. And some of them are having a rethink. It is my plea to our people that if the time comes for the elections, the people should tow the part of peace ”
He expressed hope that with the setting up of a committee of eminent Ijaw sons to reconcile all warring factions the much needed peace and progress will be achieved, stating that there is light at the end of the tunnel to put to an end the lingering leadership crisis in INC.
While urging all patriotic sons and daughters of Ijawland to have faith in the reconciliatory committee headed by HRM Justice Francis Tabai (retd), enjoined them not to grandstand on their positions but rather give peace a chance for the overall interest and development of Ijaws nation
He commended the Miracle Governor of Bayelea State, Senator Duoye Diri for the foresight in convening a meeting of Ijaw leaders of thought to set a template to reposition the Ijaw National Congress and to chart a common front for the unity and progress of the Ijaw people.
Erasmus who a lot serve as a poineer exco member of the Fumodu led INC appreciated Governor Duoye Diri for appointing him as the Commissioner of Ijaw National Affairs, stressing that with his appointment as a cabinet member of the Bayelea State executive council the governor has once again demonstrated his love and passion for the oneness of the Ijaw people.
The Commissioner used the medium to appeal to stakeholders in Rivers State politics to in the spirit of brotherliness and togetherness concede the number one position of the governor of the state to a riverine man, saying that it is by so doing that every section of the state can be given a sense of belonging.
He maintained the the Ijaws in Rivers State have eminently qualified and patriotic sons and daughters who mean well for the state.
