The Academic Associates PeaceWorks (AAPW) has said that it stand in solidarity with crisis threatening the ecosystems, economies and health.
It appeal for policymakers and the general public to take this year’s theme seriously.
This year’s world environmental day is with the theme:” It is all about plastic pollution and what we can do to tackle it”.
However, the statement signed and issued to newsmen on Thursday, in Yenagoa by Success Nwanedo, Senior Communications Officer AAPW said.
“In commemoration of this important day, we draw attention to the outcome of our recent Policy Dialogue and Exhibition on the Green and Blue Economy.
“Which reinforce three interconnected priorities in the fight against environmental degradation.
“Promoting sustainable agricultural practices that minimise plastic use and waste while the local, regional, and federal levels, ensuring a supportive framework,” the statement reads.
It also said “Ensuring the long-term resilience of our environment and communities, recycling enterprises, and marine ecosystem protection, is essential to reducing plastic pollution
“Fostering collaborative dialogue among stakeholders to inform and shape inclusive policy at strengthening green and blue economy initiatives, including waste management innovation, sustainability and circular economy practices.
“Plastic biodiversity, as it is a significant driver of climate change, sustainability and circular economy practices,” it reads.
He said that the priorities are more relevant in light of the Interstate Peer Learning Workshop held on Thursday in Yenagoa under Danish funded project.
“Advancing Community Capacity to Mitigate at Academic Associates PeaceWorks.
“We believe that ending plastic pollution is more than an ending plastic pollution. This means investing in sustainable alternatives, enforcing responsibly.
“Urgent appeal for policymakers and the general public to take this year’s theme seriously.
Plastic biodiversity, as it is a significant driver of climate change.
“We therefore call on government institutions, businesses, civil society, and citizens to join hands in environmental necessity; it is a moral imperative. Let this World Environment Day be a turning point.
“Pollution is not only an environmental issue but also a threat to human health, livelihoods, and production and consumption patterns, and cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility.
“Climate Change and Develop Green and Blue Economy”, where experts across sectors issued a clear in our collective journey toward a cleaner, healthier, and more just world,” it reads.
